Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Germany and you should definitely visit it. Here are my insider tips and instagrammable photo spots with a map to ensure you have the best possible visit.

Best time to visit Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein castle is a all year destination. It is beautiful in all seasons, but there are just less people in winter. The best time to visit during the day is early in the morning or late in the evening outside the opening hours of the castle. Being there for sunrise or sunset let you avoid the crowds and you have the best light.

How to get to Neuschwanstein Castle

You can take a bus from Füssen or get to the castle by car. There are a lot of parking lots for 10 euros. From the parking and the bus station you have to walk up the hill around 20-30 minutes or you take a shuttle bus (3 euros up, 2 euros down or a combi ticket for 3,50 euros). An other way is the horse-drawn carriage (5,5 euros up, 3 euros down).

About the Tickets to Neuschwanstein

The castle just can be visited during a guided tour. You should buy the tickets for the castle online. Book them in advance cause the tickets are sold out for weeks. But every morning there are some remaining stocks for that day you can buy. A ticket costs 15 euros plus 2,5 euros for online purchase.

What to do in Neuschwanstein Castle

The guided tour through Neuschwanstein lasts around 30 minutes. Afterwards you can visit the Marienbrücke for a magical view on the castle and walk around the area. It is even possible to go on some hikes in the mountains. Close by is the Hohenschwangau Castle you can visit. A ticket is 21 euros and a guided tour lasts 45 minutes. Afterwards you can visit the museum of Bavarian Kings for 14 euros per person or walk around the Alpsee. The lake is also beautiful for a nice swim.

If you want a nice holiday photo, Neuschwanstein Castle is exactly the right place. Here are my four most instagrammable photo spots from Neuschwanstein Castle for your next trip.

Marienbrücke

The most famous spot for taking photos of the castle is the bridge Marienbrücke. But you need to be there really early or late to avoid crowds. From the castle it’s a 15 minutes walk up the hill to the bridge. Just follow the signs.

Viewpoint of the Neuschwanstein Castle

This one is my favourite view on Neuschwanstein Castle, cause it is not so crowded and the view is stunning. You walk on the other side of the Marienbrücke and follow the path up the hill until you see a small platform on the left. It toons us around 5-10 minutes for this way and the view from the platform is also amazing. You find the platform in Google Maps called “Viewpoint of the Neuschwanstein Castle and Alpsee”. Then you leave the path and climb up the hill on the left. Be careful it is really climbing up and down, but it is just 2-5 minutes. There are a lot of spots where you can see the castle like in my photo. If you are afraid of highs don’t sit and walk too close to the edge.

Viewing Platform Neuschwanstein

The platform is right in front of the main entrance of the castle. It can get really crowded due to that, so be there early in the morning or late in the evening. The light is also best at both times. Just walk past the small kiosk and turn right to the lockers. At the end there is the platform on the right. The view of the castle and down into the valley is simply spectacular.

View from the valley

From the valley you have a lot of magical views on the castle. I took some nice shots with Neuschwanstein in the background from the Hohenschwangau Castle and the Alpsee. But there are also numerous beautiful views of Neuschwanstein Castle from the streets on the way there. I have marked a nice viewpoint from the road on the map below. But just keep an eye out for it.
